SGP MEP Bert-Jan Ruissen paid a working visit to Rapide Bevrachting to speak with entrepreneurs and local officials about the strength and future of the maritime sector in Altena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am impressed by the maritime cluster in Altena,\u201d said MEP Bert-Jan Ruissen during a working visit to the port in Werkendam. \u201cThe intensive cooperation of some forty companies makes a valuable contribution, partly through innovation, to the regional economy and the maritime manufacturing industry in the Netherlands.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Director Dik Hovestadt of Rapide Bevrachting emphasized the importance of European attention: \u201cIt is good that Brussels has an eye for our sector. We need each other to remain competitive and innovative.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the visit, Ruissen pointed out the importance of strong and modern ports for the future of inland shipping. \u201cOur environmentally friendly inland shipping deserves sufficient facilities. In Brussels, I will continue to call for attention to the sector in which the Netherlands is an international leader.\u201d He called it positive that the European Union is working on a European Maritime Industrial Strategy (EMIS), which should contribute to strengthening the industry and increasing sustainability. The sector is also high on the agenda at the national level, with the recently drafted Maritime Manufacturing Industry sector agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alderman Hans Tanis explained the plans for further port development. Due to the growth of the maritime manufacturing industry and changing market conditions, a shortage of quay length and water-bound industrial land has arisen. In collaboration with the province, the region, and the National Steering Office, the feasibility of a third port is currently being investigated. The results of this study are expected soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SGP lead candidate Henri de Raad emphasized the importance of continued support for the cluster: \u201cIt is one of the driving forces behind our local economy and provides a lot of employment. That is why we are committed to providing space for entrepreneurship and for the sustainable further development of this sector.
